Coping with Physician Burnout

In earlier blogs, we discussed burnout in physicians as well as how to recognize what burnout looks like. But if you’re experiencing burnout, what should you do? How should you cope?

According to Medscape’s National Physician Burnout, Depression & Suicide Report, the most common coping mechanisms for physician burnout include exercising, talking with friends and family members, and playing or listening to music. Unfortunately, unhealthy coping mechanisms are also common: many physicians deal with burnout by isolating themselves, sleeping, eating junk food, or abusing substances.

What are the best ways to cope with burnout?

Below, we’ve listed some of the best ways to deal with physician burnout.

Maintain a strong support system.

Make sure to regularly communicate with close friends and family members. Go out to dinner, catch a film, or simply spend time together in the same room.

Participate in community activities.

Join a club, attend a support group, or spend time volunteering! It’s important to have something to focus on that isn’t your job.

Take time off.

Physicians who work longer hours are more likely to experience burnout. Take steps to improve your work-life balance by using your sick days, taking a leave of absence, or going on vacation.

Learn how to set boundaries.

It’s okay to say no sometimes! Set boundaries, and don’t take on more work than you can handle.

Treat your body well.

Eating healthy food, getting enough sleep, and regularly exercising are all vital to your mental health.

Set aside time to relax.

Each day, set aside time to do something enjoyable, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Read a book, take a bath, or indulge in your favorite television show.

All of these are excellent ways to improve your mental health and avoid burnout. If you’re starting to feel some of that telltale exhaustion, don’t wait – address it early. Physician burnout has been linked to poor patient care and increased risk of suicide.
