Sightpath’s Journey In My Eyes: Heather Kummet

I started at Sightpath Medical almost 11 years ago, back when the company was called Midwest Surgical Services. At the time, my sister was working here and loved it, so when I wanted a job change, I joined the Sightpath team.

Back then, Sightpath Medical only had about 20 employees at HQ and 40 in the field. We often enjoyed group lunches, after-hours events, and I truly felt like my coworkers were more than just people I worked with – they were like a second family. Over the years the company has experienced huge growth, more the doubling the size of the HQ and quadrupling the field staff. Of course, people have come and gone, and with them, dynamics have changed – but maintaining the culture the company was founded on remains important. 11 years later I still enjoy coming to work everyday. And more than that, I work for a company that values me as much as I value it.

Stella, Please

“Stella, Please.” That’s what Matt Lee, Sightpath Medical MoFe Engineer says to his MoFe laser when he has to calibrate her. Yes, his laser is named Stella! He got the inspiration for her name from the song “Stella, Please” by Conner Christian & Southern Gothic because at the very beginning of his time with the laser he’d sing that song while working on her. Matt now plays that song anytime he has to work on his beloved laser and so far it has been good luck! As you can see in the photo, Matt isn’t the only one that loves Stella; Dr. Bregman with Eye Health Partners in Nashville shares Matt’s love for her!

Are you careful about privacy and HIPAA policies within your practice?

A few basic initiatives that office managers can do to reduce the likelihood of unethical, or illegal, information sharing include sensitizing staff on how even seemingly innocent information sharing can turn into a serious privacy or confidentiality breach, and also creating an overall attitude of caution and discretion publishing in any health related information in any form. Obviously, related information shared with medical or technical consultants involved in the patient’s care is perfectly acceptable.

It is critical for clinics and practices to set strict policies on social networking and data sharing. These policies include smart phones in the office and anything that can be transmitted through social networking.
